Getting started in Unit 12

This section has been designed to help new members get their sea legs. As always please don't hesitate to ask any unit member if you are unsure about any aspect of what you need or should be doing.

Some of the items here are applicable to most all CCGA units across Canada, while others are specific to Unit 12.

Equipment

The Unit will issue you most of the equipment that you will require, however there are a few things you should have for yourself. Most of this is covered in detail in the crew manual but we have summarized it here as well:

Unit Issue


The unit will issue you the folowing items:
  • Crew Vest:
      
          
    • Flashlight/strobe
    •     
    • Knife
    •     
    • First aid pocket-mask
    •     
    • All-weather Writing pads
    •   
  • Log book
  • Crew Manual
  • Study guides (where applicable)
  • Gloves
  • Survival Suit/PFD (when going out)
  • Helmet(when going out)
  • Goggles(when going out)
  • Handheld Marive VHF (when going out)
  • Pager (when on duty) - More Info About Pagers


Personal Items


You should pick-up the following items to complete your kit:
      
  • Dry bag
      
          
    • Snack bars
    •     
    • Spare cloths
    •     
    • extra gear (gloves, hat etc...)
    •     
    • Spare Glasses/sunglasses or contacts cases (where applicable)
    •     
    • Spare change
    •     
    • Bottle of water
    •     
    • Other small personal items
    •   
  •   
  • Rubber Boots - pick these up at Work Wear World and the unit will cover the coast - just sign for them


Optional Items


You may wish to have some of the following, but these are not required:
      
  • Head light (water resistant mountaineering type or equiv.)
  •   
  • Handheld VHF radio - some unit members have their own radio and monitor transmissions
  •   
  • Crew Uniform - available through the CCGA for special events.
