Committment
Before joining as a either an administrative or crew member, there are a few things you should take into consideration. We request a minimum committment of one year. We invest a lot of training in our crew members and our experienced coxswain will be spending a lot of their volunteered time with you. It takes a while for administrative members to get into the swing of things as well. Our volunteers are always happy to help new members get their 'sea-legs' all we ask in return is your committment.
Crew Member Risk
CCGA-P crew members can find themselves in harms way. One should consider this duty an honour, yet consider it carefully. Any mariner that goes to sea experiences risk and especially those that endeavour to go out and assist mariners that are already in trouble. You should discuss your choice with your family before making a commitment to serve as a SAR (Search And Rescue) crew member.
Administrative Requirements
A willing heart and caring personality are the two main requirments for administrative members. The volunteers of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary - Pacific must raise funds to support everything we do. To accomplish this goal we organize special events, seek donations, and work throughout the community to raise awareness and funds to support our efforts.
Crew Requirements
Auxiliary Crew members are part of the front line for marine SAR in Canada. You must be able to reach the rescue craft within 20 minutes of receiving the emergency page, and we have to be underway within 30 minutes of receiving an emergency call. So when you are 'on-call', you have to remain close to the boat. Our rescue boat is docked in Secret Cove (Duke's Marina): 49N31.9 123W57.4
Crew members must be over the age of majority and fit enough to meet the physical challenges of crewing on a high speed rescue vessel in all weather conditions. Crew are 'on-call' (wear a pager) according to our duty roster. Currently our crew members are 'on-call' for one in every four weeks, day and night and in all weather conditions. In addition, crew must partake in continuing on-water training a minimum of 3 hours every calendar quarter and attend meetings 2 evenings each month.
